Spiritual budgeting

Last week was budget week. Both the federal government and the West Australian government released their budgets. Those of us who are simple taxpayers are wondering what it means for us. Are there going to be tax cuts? Are we going to have to pay more for services? Are we going to be better off or worse off? It’s a pretty important week with some pretty important decisions being made.

It makes me think about our Spiritual well being. Are we better off “spiritually” this year than last year, or are we worse off?
I guess we could say success for a lot of people in this life is how much money they have, or how many things they posses. How do we rate our spiritual well being?

Jesus said, “Do not lay up your self treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal” Matthew 6:19-20.

It is in heaven where true riches are found. Economies rise and economies fall, we may have money, we may not, but the kingdom of heaven remains consistent. If we invest in heaven we have a guaranteed return – eternal salvation.

There’s an old song that goes, “Count your blessing, name them one by one, Count your blessings, see what God has done.” As they say it’s an oldie but a goodie. We have been blessed in so many ways, we are told be have every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3). Let us count these and number them all.

The budgets may bring temporal joy or sadness, but if heaven is our home we have a secure future, an eternal future. Let us focus on that.

I find most people count their trials rather than blessings...thus the epidemic of depression on Earth...focusing on blessings balances and enriches the soul. Depression has no hold. Earthly things fall away and are forgotten with time, but the Everlasting is permanent.
