1st Corinthians Chapter 10

Edification

Key verse
1Cor. 10:23 All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.

VS 1-11 Examples from the Old Testament
Paul starts off this chapter by going to examples from the Old Testament.  While we do not live under the Laws of the Old Testament, we can learn so much from the lessons of those who have gone before. Note:
Ex. 13:21 The LORD was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.
Direction
Ex. 14:22 The sons of Israel went through the midst of the sea on the dry land, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
Salvation
This was the children of Israel's final deliverance from the Egyptians. What Paul is showing us here is that the Israelites were in a similar position that we are in as Christians and that what they went through stands today as a warning to us. They were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.  We are baptised into Christ Rom 6:3, Gal 3:27

1 Cor 10:3-5 spiritual food and drink
The Israelites we fed by God and yet they still fell.  We too today are fed by God, notice John 6:35  Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.

1Cor. 10:5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.
This does not sound like saved once always saved!

While we don't live under the commandments of the Old Testament we can and must learn from them.  Sin is still the same and we will suffer the same eternal consequences for sin, Rom 6:23

Paul gives a list of the sins of the Israelites:
• Idolaters Ex 32:4
• Immoral Num 25
• Trying the Lord Num 21:5
• Grumble Num 16:41

We need to remember the example of those who lived under the Old Covenant and learn from them.
1 Peter 1:10-12, Gal 3:24

Vs 12-13 “… take heed that he does not fall.”
This is speaking to us today, pay heed and know that we can fall.  in 1 Cor 10:13, Paul us a passage that can really encourage us.  We are not alone, God is with us and will aid us in overcoming sin

Rom 11:17-22
2Pet. 3:17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness,

We need to understand the faithfulness of God and use it to overcome sin
